Ben Thornton, PhD Scientific Advisor

Ben Thornton, PhD is an independent consultant to the biotechnology industry. He was formerly the Senior Vice President of Technology for Pain Therapeutics in Austin, Texas. Prior to Pain Therapeutics, Dr. Thornton spent nine years at Apovia AG (Munich, Germany) as Head of Research and a Member of the Managing Board. Dr. Thornton was also Managing Director of Apovia Inc and a founder of Apovia Inc's predecessor, Immune Complex Corporation of San Diego, CA. Apovia developed vaccines for infectious diseases using a Hepatitis B core protein platform. Prior to Apovia, Dr. Thornton was the Vice President of Preclinical Development at GeneMedicine. Dr. Thornton was the Director of Research of the Pharmaceutical Research Institute (responsible for research centers in La Jolla, CA and Sydney, Australia).

Dr. Thornton received his undergraduate degree from Abilene Christian University in Biology and his PhD from the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (Houston) in Molecular Virology. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology. Dr. Thornton presently serves as a Trustee of the Torrey Pines Institute of Molecular Studies (Port St. Lucie, La Jolla) and is a member of the Board of Directors of Orphagen Pharmaceuticals (San Diego).
